Goalkeeper Unai Simón underwent surgery this week and will be out of action for at least four months. The player, who won the European Championship with Spain last Sunday, underwent surgery due to instability of the scaphoid in his right wrist.
Surgeon Francisco Piñal, who performed the procedure on the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper, explained the player’s recovery process.

“He will be out for four or five months because he has to be immobilized for two months, the time it takes for the ligament to heal. As much as Unai Simón is, we are all very similar on the inside and that takes time to heal. Afterwards he will have a spectacular recovery compared to the rest of us, but even after four or five months I don’t think he will be able to reach his level. That’s why I started now to give him time to recover,” explained the doctor on the Spanish program. “The spar”from the radio Ser chain.
Francisco Piñal revealed that Unai Simón suffered the injury last year and that the player should undergo surgery as soon as possible. In turn, the goalkeeper decided to undergo surgery after the European Championship, playing in the competition with injections for the pain.
“At the beginning of the Euro Cup, they injected him because it was bothering him. He has been coping and doing very well. He had the injury for a long time, maybe a year. It is a problem that usually causes pain, but he has coped very well. It is an injury that, if not treated in time, can cause osteoarthritis of the wrist, which is why we were interested in resolving it. He had his unavoidable commitments, we all live in a complex world. Although it would have been ideal to operate on him months ago, we all have commitments that we cannot abandon,” concluded the surgeon.
Unai Simón has played in six of Spain’s seven Euro 2016 matches. Last season for Athletic Bilbao, the goalkeeper played 36 matches, all in the Spanish league.
