Reason for IOC-cleared Russian wrestler’s refusal to compete in Olympics named

Mamiashvili said that wrestler Mamedov should have gone to the Olympics individually

The President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (RWF) Mikhail Mamiashvili named the reason for the refusal of Russian wrestler Shamil Mamedov, who received permission from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His words are quoted by Sport24.

Mamiashvili said that a relapse of an old injury prevented the athlete from competing at the 2024 Games. At the same time, he emphasized that Mamedov should have gone to the Olympics individually, and not from the FSBR.

Earlier, it was reported that Mamedov had received clearance from the IOC and was included in the application list of participants in the Games. He was supposed to compete in the weight category up to 65 kilograms. He subsequently withdrew from participation in the Olympics.

On July 6, the FSBR announced the refusal of the national team representatives to participate in the Olympics. They noted that the Russian side does not accept the unsportsmanlike principle of selection for the Games.
