2014 World Champion Thomas Muller announces retirement from German national team

Thomas Muller’s career with the German national team has come to an end. On Monday, the 34-year-old forward announced that he will no longer play for his country.

“When I was able to play my first international match more than 14 years ago, I would never have dreamed of this. I have always been very proud to play for my country. I would like to thank all the fans and members of the national team for their support over the past years. Take the excitement and joy of this year’s Euro with you on the road to the 2026 World Cup. That is what I will do now as a fan, not as a player on the pitch,” said the Bayern Munich player.

In total, Muller has played 131 times for the national team. Only Lothar Matthäus, with 150, and Miroslav Klose, with 137, are ahead of him. Among the top scorers, the striker is in seventh place with 45 goals.

Muller made his debut for the senior national team on 3 March 2010 in Munich against Argentina. A few months later, he made his debut at the World Cup in South Africa. With five goals, the then 20-year-old was the tournament’s top scorer. In addition to the Golden Boot, he also received the award for best young player.

Back in 2014, in Brazil, Muller and his teammates celebrated the World Cup title, Germany’s fourth star.

The striker also played in two other World Cups and three European Championships. His farewell was in the 2-1 defeat to Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, in Germany.

“Muller is an exceptional footballer in every respect. An exemplary professional and a real man. His achievements and titles speak for themselves. He has one of the most successful periods in the history of our national team. I have always admired Muller’s footballing quality, his character, his humour and his intelligence. Muller will be greatly missed,” said German Football Association President Bernd Neuendorf.

“I am grateful to have been able to accompany Thomas during part of his career, both with the national team and with Bayern. It has been a pleasure to work with him. He is a passionate professional. He has not only enriched our Euro team with his sporting qualities, but also as a leader. He is a very intelligent player. I hope that Thomas will continue to shape German football in the future, both as a Bayern player and in other roles,” added coach Julian Nagelsmann.
