Russian wrestler cleared by IOC withdraws from Olympics

IOC-cleared wrestler Mamedov refuses to participate in Olympic Games

Russian wrestler Shamil Mamedov has refused to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games, TASS reports.

“On Saturday, Mamedov made the final decision on the impossibility of participating in the Olympics due to a relapse of the injury,” the Russian Wrestling Federation (RWF) said. It is noted that the athlete notified the International Olympic Committee (IOC) of this.

Earlier it was reported that Mamedov received permission from the IOC and was included in the application list of participants in the Games. He was supposed to compete in the weight category up to 65 kilograms.

On July 6, the FSBR announced the refusal of the national team representatives to participate in the Olympics. They noted that the Russian side does not accept the unsportsmanlike principle of selection for the Games.

The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11. Russians and Belarusians were allowed to compete as individual neutral athletes.
