Klopp turns down US national team coach job

After the dismissal of coach Gregg Berhalter from the US national team following the fiasco in the Copa América played at home, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) tried to hire German Jurgen Klopp, who left Liverpool at the end of the last European season. According to the The Athleticthe coach politely declined, saying he wanted to take a break from football after his last job, which lasted nine years.

Despite the refusal, the Americans still have Klopp at the top of the list of possible names for the next cycle of the national team. According to sporting director Matt Crocker, they are urgently looking for a big name to join and help the team be more competitive, since they will host the next edition of the World Cup, in 2026, together with Canada and Mexico.

At Liverpool from 2016 to 2024, Klopp defined an era at the club, winning the club’s first Premier League title in over 30 years and its first Champions League since 2005.

He announced his departure from the club in January, when the team was top of the English Premier League and competing for the Europa League and FA Cup titles. They would later decline in performance, finishing the season with only the English League Cup title, and in third place in the Premier League.

“How can I say it? I’m running out of energy. I knew I would have to announce this at some point. I’m still fine, but I know I can’t do the job over and over and over again,” the coach said in the video announcing his departure, published earlier this year.
