Raphael Claus to referee Copa America final and reunite with Messi after controversy

The Copa América final has been decided: Argentina and Colombia will compete for the title of best team on the continent. The match will take place this Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami at 9pm (Brasília time). The referee for the final will be Brazilian Raphael Claus, as announced by Conmebol on Thursday.

In addition to Claus, five other Brazilians will be part of the refereeing team for the final: Bruno Pires and Rodrigo Correa (assistants), Rodolpho Toski (VAR), Danilo Manis (VAR assistant) and Bruno Boschilia (fifth official). The latter will also perform the same role in the third-place match between Canada and Uruguay.

Raphael Claus refereed only one game in this edition of the Copa América. The Brazilian was responsible for the match between Mexico and Venezuela, in the second round of Group B of the competition. Claus distributed four yellow cards and awarded two penalties in the match.

In 2020, Claus refereed the match between Argentina and Paraguay, for the South American Qualifiers for the World Cup. On that occasion, Claus disallowed a goal for the Albiceleste after seeing a foul at the beginning of the play and did not award a penalty for Los Hermanos. Lionel Messi was irritated by the decision and said to the referee: “You’ve already screwed us twice”. The two will meet again in the Copa América final this Sunday.
