The game – The match had a ‘lukewarm’ first half, without much danger for either side, but with a small English advantage in the actions.
The first goal came only 30 minutes into the second half. From a cross that went under the legs of England defender Konsa, his defensive partner, John Stones, failed to clear the ball, which fell to Breel Embolo’s feet, taking advantage to open the scoring for the Swiss.
After conceding the goal, manager Gareth Southgate opted to make three changes to the England team and go all out against Switzerland. In the 35th minute, Declan Rice gave a simple pass to Bukayo Saka, who carried the ball before unleashing a beautiful shot from outside the area with his left foot, which hit the post before hitting the net.
Extra time saw great chances wasted by Switzerland, but it wasn’t enough to break the deadlock.
In the penalty shootout, Palmer, Bellingham, Saka, Toney and Arnold converted for England. Schar, Shaquiri and Amdouni scored for Switzerland, while Akanji missed the first penalty.
