Argentine Emiliano Martínez is the goalkeeper with the most penalties saved in international competitions in the decade

On Thursday, Emiliano Martínez was once again a hero for the Argentine national team. The goalkeeper saved two penalties in the match against Ecuador (4-3), after a 1-1 draw at the NRG Stadium, in the quarterfinals of the Copa América, which guaranteed the national team’s qualification for the semifinals. With this, he became the goalkeeper with the most penalties saved in international competitions this decade (8), according to data from Sofa Score.

The athlete achieved this feat in 44 games wearing the Argentina shirt. He surpassed the following players: South African Ronwen Williams (6), Spaniard Unai Simón (6), Qatari Meshaal Aissa Barsham (5) and Egyptian Mohamed Abou Gabal (5).

In addition to the dispute won against Ecuador, Martínez also won the other three in which he was in the Argentine goal: two in the 2022 World Cup, quarter-finals against the Netherlands and final with France, and another in the 2021 Copa América, semi-final against Colombia.

With Emiliano Martínez as the star, Lionel Messi’s team advanced to the next round of the Copa América. The team will face the winner of Canada and Venezuela, who face each other this Friday, at 10 pm (Brasília time), at AT&T Stadium.
