Olympic swimming to take place in Vers-sur-Marne if Seine remains dirty
The head of the Paris Olympic organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, has named an alternative location for the marathon swimming competitions in case the Seine remains dirty, L’Équipe quotes him as saying.
“To guarantee the athletes the opportunity to compete, we have set up a backup venue, the canoeing venue in Vers-sur-Marne, which has everything needed to host the competition,” said Estanguet. He noted that the swimming portion of the triathlon could also be postponed or cancelled due to weather conditions.
Earlier, environmentalists conducted tests and found that the quality of water in the Seine does not meet the standards recommended for bathing. However, the latest studies conducted at the end of June showed an improvement in water quality to acceptable levels.
The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
