Costa Rica beats Paraguay but finishes third in group as Brazil is eliminated from Copa América

This Tuesday, at Q2 Stadium, Costa Rica beat Paraguay 2-1, in a game valid for the third and final round of the group stage of the America Cup. Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcócer scored for the Costa Rican team and Ramón Sosa scored for the Paraguayans.

Thus, Costa Rica ends the group stage with four points in third place in Group D. Paraguay, which lost all three matches, leaves the competition without any points and at the bottom of its group.

Colombia and Brazil complete Group D and therefore advance to the quarterfinals of the Copa América.

The goals

Costa Rica opened the scoring just 3 minutes into the first half. From the left, Joseph Mora crossed and Francisco Calvo appeared, unmarked, to head the ball into the back of the net.

Four minutes later, at 7, the Costa Rican team increased its advantage. Jefferson Brenes passed to Josimar Alcócer, who took the ball, cleared the marking and hit a low shot into the right corner of Morínigo.

In the 9th minute of the second half, after a great play, Mathías Villasanti found Josimar Alcócer free in the penalty area. The player then finished with his right foot into the left corner of Sequeira’s goal to close the score.
