On Tuesday, Al-Ittihad, from Saudi Arabia, announced on its social media the dismissal of Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo, 48 years old. Announced in November 2023, his contract was valid until mid-2025.
During his time in charge of the Saudi team, the coach recorded 16 wins, three draws and 14 defeats. In the last seven matches of the season, there were five defeats, one draw and just one victory.
It is worth remembering that of the 14 defeats, four resulted in elimination. The first of these was the elimination in the Club World Cup against Al-Ahly. The second was in the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League, against Jorge Jesus’ Al-Hilal, who also took the title from Al-Ittihad in the final of the Saudi Super Cup, and in the semifinal of the King’s Cup.
Gallardo ended the season with Al-Ittihad in fifth place in the Saudi Premier League, with 54 points.
To replace the Argentine, the club is looking at Stefano Pioli. The 58-year-old former Italian player left Milan after the end of the season and is therefore without a club.
