The “two faces” of Mbappé in the round of 16 of the European Championship

Kylian Mbappé had “two faces” in France’s 1-0 win over Belgium on Monday in the round of 16 of the Eurocup. On the one hand, the satisfaction of advancing in the continental tournament; on the other, the frustration of a striker who made more mistakes than he got right.

With the victory, the French can definitely turn the page on their Euro 2021 Round of 16 defeat to Switzerland. This match was especially painful for Mbappé, who missed the penalty shootout that sealed France’s defeat.

Against Belgium, however, the striker did not have the decisive role required of one of the best players in the world.

France won with a bit of luck thanks to saves from goalkeeper Mike Maignan and a goal from Randal Kolo Muandi in the 40th minute, with a shot that deflected off Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen before going in.

From physical problems in the national team’s training camp to a broken nose in his debut against Switzerland, Mbappé has not had an easy Euro. The feeling is that the star is asleep in Germany, despite having scored against Poland (from the penalty spot).

One goal away from Platini

Mbappé seems to be lacking confidence, and this was repeated against Belgium. Perhaps bothered by the mask he had to wear after breaking his nose, the French number 10 was inaccurate in the few times he appeared in the game.

With just a few minutes left before half-time, it led to one of France’s clearest opportunities, which midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni failed to capitalise on.

A good cross from full-back Jules Koundé early in the second half left Mbappé in a good position to finish, but his shot went wide.

In another play by Koundé, who was voted the best player of the match, Mbappé had another good opportunity, but shot over the goal.

After failing to score once again, the striker will at least have the French victory to celebrate until the quarter-finals.

In the next game, Mbappé could break a relevant record: Michel Platini’s 14 goals in the final stages of major international tournaments.
