French player calls for curbing far-right in the country

French defender Jules Koundé called on Monday to “block” Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party in the second round of France’s elections on June 7.

“It will be important to stop the far right and the National Rally. This is not a party that will lead our country to more freedom and fraternity,” said the Barcelona player in the press room in Germany after France’s 1-0 victory over Belgium in the round of 16 of the Eurocup.

“I was disappointed with the direction our country has taken, with great support for a party that goes against our values of coexistence, respect and that wants to divide the French people,” said Koundé, referring to the first round of legislative elections, held last Sunday, in which the RN and its allies obtained 33% of the votes, being the most voted force.

Following the victory of the far right in the European elections on 9 June in France, French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly (lower house) and called early elections. Since then, the situation in the country has been monitored by the French national team.

Striker Marcus Thuram called on June 15 for voters to vote against Marine Le Pen’s party, which won more than 30% of the vote in France on June 9.

These statements were supported by Kylian Mbappé, the main star and captain of the French team, who also asked the French to “vote against extremes and divisive ideas”.

Other players, such as Ousmane Dembélé, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud, limited themselves to encouraging their compatriots to participate in the elections.
