UN expert Xanthaki: Russians should not be discriminated against before Olympics

During a discussion at the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Special Rapporteur on cultural rights Alexandra Xanthaki spoke about the admission of Russian athletes to the Olympic Games. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

Xanthaki stood up for Russians and Belarusians, saying that athletes should not be discriminated against based on their nationality. “The discussion about their participation in the Olympics was very important, although very difficult. It highlighted the importance of separating the actions of the state from the behavior of individuals,” she said.

The UN expert also supported the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to admit Russians and Belarusians to the Olympic Games in Paris in a neutral status. “I positively assess the application of this principle to all athletes, regardless of nationality. It is important to conduct an individual assessment regarding the admission of neutral athletes,” Xanthaki emphasized.

In December 2023, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the 2024 Games as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the Armed Forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
