Denmark national team goalkeeper Schmeichel: I’m not sure that football and common sense are compatible
The goalkeeper of the Danish national team that was eliminated from Euro 2024, Kasper Schmeichel, criticized the modern rules of football. His words are quoted by The Sun.
“I’ve been playing for 23 years and I still don’t know the rules. I don’t understand what a player should do when he’s running and the ball hits his hand from a metre away. I’m not sure football and common sense are still compatible,” Schmeichel said.
The Danes lost to Germany in the 1/8 finals of Euro 2024 with a score of 0:2. In a goalless draw at the start of the second half, match referee Michael Oliver first canceled out Danish defender Joakim Anderson’s goal for being offside by a few centimetres. And in the next episode he awarded a penalty against the Danes for handball by the same Anderson. The ball, after a pass from the German national team player from the flank, hit the Danish national team defender on the finger.
In the first match of the 1/8 finals of the European Championship, the Italian team lost to Switzerland. This meeting ended with a score of 2:0 in favor of the team of Murat Yakin, who previously coached Spartak Moscow.
