Colombia easily beats Costa Rica and qualifies for the Copa América

Colombia beat Costa Rica 3-0 on Friday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale in the second round of Group D of the Copa América. The goals were scored by Luis Díaz, Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Córdoba.

With the result, the Colombian team opened a big lead at the top of the group, with six points, and secured their place in the next phase, putting pressure on Brazil to achieve a victory against Paraguay – a match that takes place this Friday, at 10pm (from Brasilia). Costa Rica remains with one point, in third place.

The Brazilian team depends solely on itself to reach the top spot in the group, needing to beat Paraguay and, later, Colombia in the last round, despite the stumble in the debut against Costa Rica.

Colombia’s next game is against Brazil at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Costa Rica will face Paraguay at Q2 Stadium in Austin. Both games will be played at the same time next Tuesday at 10 p.m.

The game – Colombia dominated the action throughout the match. The first goal came in the 31st minute of the first half when Luis Díaz converted a penalty after Jhon Córdoba was brought down by the Costa Rican goalkeeper inside the area.

In the second half, in the 14th minute, defender Davinson Sánchez hit a header after a corner kick from Jhon Arias to increase the score for the Colombians.

Three minutes later, at 17, São Paulo’s James Rodríguez made a beautiful pass behind the Costa Rican defense to Jhon Córdoba, who finished with a powerful cross shot, giving the final score to the match.
