Cafu criticizes English Championship and points to competition as a problem for Brazil to win the World Cup

Former full-back Cafu, world champion in 2002, strongly criticized the English Championship and pointed out the competition as a major problem for Brazil to win the World Cup.

“I fear that the more Brazilians move up to the Premier League, the less chance Brazil will have of winning the World Cup,” he said in an interview with the newspaper TO THE.

Furthermore, Cafu also revealed that he does not like the way athletes are treated in England.

“Imagine being brainwashed by the media every week that you are the best in the world, while you are nowhere near the best,” he said.

Finally, the former player said that he prefers the way the Spanish press talks about players, which for him is a more appropriate way.

“I prefer La Liga because they have a great mentality of going to the finals and winning them. In La Liga they don’t have a mouth in front of the television cameras to tell lies about Spanish players or to promote them to the world. They talk about football there, not about myths,” he said.

Brazil’s Copa América squad includes eight players who played in English football last season, six of whom are midfielders. The Spanish Championship had six players from the national team in 2023/24.

After a disappointing debut, a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica, the Brazilian National Team takes to the field this Friday, at 10 pm (Brasília time), against Paraguay, at the Allegiant Stadium, in Las Vegas, for the second round of the Copa América.
