Dutchman Van de Velde, convicted of pedophilia, to compete at Olympics
Child-raping Dutch volleyball player Steven van de Velde will compete in the Olympics, CNN reports.
“He was convicted under English law and served his sentence. Since his return, there has been no reason to doubt him,” said Michel Everaert, director general of the Dutch Volleyball Federation.
In 2014, beach volleyball player Van de Velde met a 12-year-old girl on social media and then had sex with her. He reportedly knew the child’s age. The athlete was sentenced to four years in prison. He served part of his sentence in the UK and was then extradited to his home country, where he was released.
Earlier, the world’s most decorated footballer Dani Alves gave new testimony in the rape case. He stated that the girl accusing him of rape did not resist.
