Netherlands loses to Austria and finishes in 3rd place in Euro group D

The Netherlands faced Austria, this Tuesday, in the final round of the group stage of the European Championship, at the Olympiastadion, in Berlin. The Dutch were surprised and ended up defeated 3-2, falling to 3rd place in group D.

With the result, the Netherlands team guarantees a place in the next phase of the competition as it is one of the best third-placed teams. Austria, in turn, takes six points and takes the lead in the group, which ends with France in second place.

The two teams still do not have a defined opponent in the round of 16, which is scheduled to take place between June 29th and July 2nd.

Austria opened the scoring after just six minutes of play. In a play on the left, Alexander Prass crossed and Dutchman Donyell Malen deflected it into his own goal.

The Netherlands equalized only at the beginning of the second half. After three minutes, in a quick counterattack, Xavi Simons opened the ball to Cody Gakpo, who cut the ball and hit the corner to score a beautiful goal.

Afterwards, Florian Grillitsch received the ball on the baseline and found Romano Schmid in the middle of the area to finish and put Austria back in the lead, in the 16th minute. The Dutch team tied the game again after 30 minutes. Weghourts sent a cross into the middle of the area and Memphis Depay appeared to finish.

At 35, Marcel Sabitzer received it from Baumgartner and hit hard to score Austria’s third goal and guarantee the victory.
