In Germany, suspects were detained in an attempt to blackmail the family of Michael Schumacher
Two men have been detained in Germany suspected of attempting to blackmail the family of Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher. Sky News reports this.
The racer’s relatives said that extortionists contacted them and demanded several million euros. Otherwise, they threatened to post certain files about the Schumacher family online. To prove the reality of the threats, they shared several documents with the family.
The blackmailers were caught in the parking lot of a supermarket in the center of Groß-Gerau. They were men aged 53 and 30 from the city of Wuppertal. It turned out that they were on probation for another case. Violators face a fine or imprisonment for up to five years.
The seven-time Formula 1 champion suffered a traumatic brain injury while skiing in the Alps in December 2013. As a result of the incident, the athlete fell into a coma. The racer is recovering in his own villa, which is located on the shores of Lake Geneva. Ralf Schumacher admitted that, despite new opportunities in medicine, his brother would not be able to live a full life.
In April 2023, the German magazine Die Aktuelle, part of the Funke media group, published an interview with the racing driver. The front page featured a photograph with the caption “Michael Schumacher, first interview!” It later turned out that the interview was generated by a neural network. Schumacher’s relatives filed a lawsuit against the publication, and the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Anne Hoffmann, was fired.
