The Athletic: Ovechkin’s contract slows down Washington’s roster renewal

The contract of Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin is recognized as one of the most ineffective in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Athletic writes about this.

“The Russian’s employment contract puts a heavy burden on the club’s payroll, and because of this, the process of updating the team’s roster is being delayed,” writes The Athletic journalist Harman Dayal. He added that Ovechkin, 38, has become so slow that he is currently one of the worst defensive forwards in the NHL.

Ovechkin’s salary for the 2023/2024 season was $12.5 million. In terms of salary, he shared fourth-sixth place in the league with Kirill Kaprizov of the Minnesota Wild and Seth Jones of Chicago.

Previously, the amount of Ovechkin’s insurance contribution for a call to the Russian national team was announced. The head coach of the Russia 25 team, Roman Rotenberg, said that the amount is several hundred thousand dollars. He emphasized that this was during the forward’s last visit to the team.

Ovechkin last competed for the Russian team at the 2019 World Championships in Slovakia. He participated in ten matches, in which he scored two goals and gave one assist. At that tournament, the national team won bronze medals.
