After committing a harsh foul on Argentine Lionel Messi during the opening game of the Copa América last Friday, Canadian defender Moise Bombito was the target of racism on the internet. Through social media, the Federation of Canada spoke out and revealed that it will contact the tournament organizers to discuss the matter.
“The Canadian Federation is aware and deeply disturbed by the racist comments made online and directed at one of the men’s national team players following tonight’s game. We are in communication with Concacaf and Conmebol regarding this matter,” it was written.

In a publication by Moise Bombito himself in Instagramthe athlete preferred not to comment much on the topic: “My beautiful Canada. There’s no room for that, nonsense.”
In the move that sparked fan outrage against Moise Bombito, the defender threw a strong tackle at Messi, who appeared to be in a lot of pain, but returned to the game normally shortly afterwards.
This was not the first time that Bombito and Messi faced each other. Previously, the two have already met in an MLS game, as the Canadian plays for the Colorado Rapids, while the Argentine plays for Inter Miami.
Moise Bombito returns to the field with the Canadian team next Tuesday, at 7pm (Brasília time), when they will face Peru in the second round of the Copa América group stage. The venue for the clash will be Children’s Mercy Park, in Kansas City.
