Italian Roberto Baggio, winner of the Ballon d’Or in 1993, was the victim of a robbery at his mansion in northeastern Italy and suffered minor injuries, local press reported.
The attack happened when the former player and his family were watching the match between Italy and Spain (0-1) for Euro 2024 on television.
Five armed men invaded the residence, near Vicenza. Baggio tried to stop them, but one of them hit him in the head with the butt of his pistol.
The criminals locked Baggio and his family in a room while they looked for money and jewelry.
The newspaper’s website Corriere della Sera states that the criminal action lasted almost 40 minutes and when Baggio realized that the thieves had left the house, the family broke down the door and called the police.
The former player was taken to hospital and received several stitches on his forehead.
Baggio played for the main Italian clubs, Juventus, Inter Milan and Milan.
He was also number 10 for the Italian team at the 1994 World Cup, when Italy was defeated in the final by Brazil in a penalty shootout. Baggio wasted the last shot, which sealed Brazil’s fourth victory.
