Russian-born fencer criticized Ukrainian woman’s refusal to shake her hand
Russian-born fencer Maya Guchmazova, who represents the Georgian national team, reacted to Ukrainian Elena Krivitskaya’s refusal to shake her hand. The athlete’s words are quoted by RT.
“Take a gun and fight, defend your homeland. Don’t travel around Switzerland at the expense of state money to attend competitions and don’t fence!” – said Guchmazova. She noted that she had known Krivitskaya for a long time and they had a normal relationship, so her gesture came as a surprise to her. “If I had done that, I would have been disqualified,” the fencer concluded.
The incident occurred at the European Championships held in Basel, Switzerland on June 17. Krivitskaya defeated Guchmazova with a score of 15:9, after which she refused to shake hands. A native of Russia reacted in an obscene manner to the behavior of a Ukrainian woman.
Guchmazova is 33 years old and was born in Vladikavkaz. The athlete changed her citizenship in 2017, switching to the Georgian flag.
