Colombia stops at VAR and draws with Ecuador for South American Qualifiers

For the 12th round of the South American Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, Colombia and Ecuador drew 0-0 this Thursday, in Barranquilla. With the result, the Colombian team will depend on a victory by Brazil over Uruguay to enter the qualifying zone for the World Cup.

Despite the blank scoreboard, there was still emotion in the duel at the Estádio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez. In the first half, Ecuador took the most danger, demanding good saves from Ospina with a header by Hincapié and a corner submission by Mena. The owners of the house, in turn, arrived with Cuadrado and Zapata, but stopped at goalkeeper Domínguez.

In the second stage, Colombia created more opportunities. Domínguez made great saves with a header by Falcao García, a powerful shot by Zapata and a low finish by Luis Díaz. In the last move of the confrontation, defender Mina, ex-Palmeiras, shook the net after kicking from side to area. Despite the Colombian euphoria, the goal was disallowed after consulting the referee with the VAR due to the defender’s hand touch.

The visitors, on the other hand, closed in an attempt to hold the tie, making many fouls and arguing a lot with the referee. Ecuador even had a penalty in their favor, but the appointment was canceled for offside after a call from the VAR.

With the result, Ecuador remains in third place in the South American Qualifiers, with 17 points won. Colombia, on the other hand, is 16 and depends on Uruguay losing to the Brazilian team to move up to fourth place.
