At 4pm (Brasília time), Germany and Scotland will play the opening game of this Euro Cup. The Germans play at home and want to play a great game in front of their fans. A Sports Gazette separated the last opening games of the last four editions of the Euro, see below:
- 2021 – Türkiye 0 x 3 Italy
In the last edition of the Euro Cup (held in 2021, but called Euro 2020), Turkey and Italy played the opening match. At that time, the competition was played in several countries across Europe. The Italians beat the Turks 3-0 and started the campaign well that would later end with the European championship title. Demiral (own goal), Immobile and Insigne scored the goals.
- 2016 – France 1 x 2 Romania
In 2016, France played at home and did not disappoint in their debut. Striker Giroud opened the scoring for the French, but a few minutes later Romania equalized. The match was heading towards a disappointing result for the hosts, when Dimitri Payet, now at Vasco, scored a great goal from outside the box and secured France’s 2-1 victory.
- 2012 – Poland 1 x 1 Greece
The 2012 Euro Cup was played in two countries at the same time: Poland and Ukraine. The Poles played the opening match of the competition against Greece, and drew 1-1. Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring, but Salpingidis equalized for the Greeks in the second half.
- 2008 – Switzerland 0 x 1 Czech Republic
The 2008 edition was also played in two countries, this time Switzerland and Austria were the venues. The Swiss played their first game at that Euro and were defeated at home. Austrian Sverkos scored the only goal of the match. It was the last time that the host team of the opening match was defeated.
The Euro post starts this Friday; remember the last opening games of the competition appeared first in Gazeta Esportiva.
