Deputy Svishchev: Russian football players will have a chance to prove themselves at tournaments
The Russian national team will still have a chance to return to international football tournaments, says Dmitry Svishchev, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, he spoke about the prospects of the Russian team to resume participation in world competitions.
“We will still have a chance to prove ourselves. Now the most important thing is to wait for our athletes to be admitted. Our guys always have a chance, we believe in them, we hope for them, our guys continue to play in European clubs, so there’s always a chance,” he said.
FIFA and UEFA suspended the Russian national football team from international competitions after the start of a special military operation on Ukrainian territory in early 2022. Then the Russian team, led by coach Valery Karpin, fought for a ticket to the World Championships in Qatar. The athletes were facing a play-off match, but Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic refused to play with Russian football players, and the Polish team automatically qualified for the World Cup.
The Euro Championship starts on June 14. This year it is taking place in Germany, with matches scheduled in 10 different cities across the country. The opening match will take place between the teams of Germany and Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The final meeting at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin is scheduled for July 14. The Russian team did not participate in the draw due to suspension and will miss the tournament for the first time since 2000.
