Fossati confirms that captain Renato Tapia will miss Peru in the Copa América

Peru coach Jorge Fossati confirmed this Wednesday that the team’s captain, Renato Tapia, from Celta de Vigo, will be absent from the 2024 Copa América in the United States, which will be played from June 20th. .

“He will not be at this Copa América,” Fossati said in an interview with the Peruvian press in Philadelphia, where Peru is preparing to play a friendly on Friday against El Salvador.

Tapia’s absence is due to the fact that the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) did not respond to the player’s request for insurance against a possible injury in the continental tournament.

Tapia, 28 years old, justified his request to the FPF by claiming that his contract with Celta de Vigo ends on June 30th.

The captain of the Peruvian team did not travel with the delegation to the United States this Tuesday and revealed his situation on social media. Until that moment there seemed to be a glimmer of a solution that ultimately did not occur after Fossati’s announcement.

“The contract with my club expires on June 30th and the international transfer period is between the months of July and August. Participating in training and games, in this context, means a very high risk for my future professional team”, he said Tap on your X and Instagram accounts.

Peru is in Group A of the Copa América alongside Argentina, the current world and continental champion, as well as Canada and Chile, against whom they will debut on June 21, in Arlington, Texas.
