Ukraine asked the IOC to ban three Russian wrestlers from the 2024 Olympic Games
President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine Vadim Gutzeit, Acting Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvey Bedny and President of the Wrestling Association of Ukraine Yuriy Kopytko sent a joint letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with a request to exclude a number of athletes from participation in the 2024 Olympic Games. The statement is available on the NOC website.
The NOC opposed the participation in the tournament of three representatives of the Russian national wrestling team – Dinara Kudaeva, Natalya Malysheva and Olga Khoroshavtseva. It is noted that Kudaeva published a post about her father, who passed away in the Northern Military District, and called him a hero, and her teammates supported her.
Also mentioned in the letter is the Belarusian girl wrestler Irina Kurachkina. She was convicted of participating in events together with Viktor Lukashenko, the son of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
According to the Ukrainian side, because of this, the athletes do not meet the requirements of neutrality. “This undermines the foundations of the international sporting community and calls into question fairness and impartiality in sporting competitions,” the statement said.
The IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the 2024 Games as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
The 2024 Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
