Cristiano Ronaldo sets the world record for most top-level appearances

Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo holds the world record for playing the most matches at the highest level. The website of the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) writes about this.

A friendly match with the Portuguese national team against the Irish, in which Ronaldo scored a double, became his 1226th in his career. The 39-year-old footballer beat former Brazil and Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni.

Ronaldo played 698 matches in the championships of Portugal, England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia, and another 101 in the cup tournaments of these countries and Super Cup meetings. He also has 220 appearances in international club competitions and 207 for the national team.

Earlier, Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez spoke about Ronaldo’s obsession. “A high-achieving player who could choose how much effort he put into training, driven by winning, obsessed with being the best, obsessed with the perfection he wants to achieve in his career. It’s contagious,” the specialist noted.

Ronaldo was included in the Portuguese national team’s squad for Euro 2024. For the forward, this will be the sixth European Championship in his career.
