Ceferin explained the non-admission of Russian youth teams to the influence of governments
President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Aleksandar Čeferin explained the non-admission of Russian youth teams to tournaments. His words are quoted by Saarbrücker Zeitung.
The head of UEFA said that at the moment it is impossible to do this, since some associations are under the strong influence of their governments. At the same time, Čeferin spoke out against any boycotts of teams: “Why should this concern children who cannot yet vote in their country?”
In September 2023, the UEFA Executive Committee proposed allowing Russian youths to participate in tournaments in a neutral status. After this, some countries, including Ukraine, announced their intention to boycott matches with Russian teams. As a result, no decision on admission was made.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation and UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team has lost the opportunity to fight for access to the finals of the World and European Championships.
