This Saturday, Grêmio drew 1-1 with Estudiantes, at Couto Pereira, in their last game in the Libertadores group stage. With the result, Tricolor Gaúcho qualified for the round of 16 in second place in group C and will face Fluminense. After the match, Renato Gaúcho spoke at a press conference about the confrontation and the failure in the search for first place.
“The group is to be congratulated for qualifying, when many didn’t believe it. We did everything we could, we didn’t play well today. We tried to get first place, we didn’t. No one can say that the game against Fluminense will be better difficult than Peñarol or vice versa. I think that in a Libertadores there is no easy game. When you classify any opponent it is very difficult to choose an opponent”, he reported.

Grêmio ended the Libertadores group stage in second place, with ten points won. The Brazilian team had the same score as the leader of group C, The Strongest, but was lower in the table due to the number of goals scored (8 to 7 for the Bolivians).
The 61-year-old coach further analyzed the duel with Fluminense and lamented that one of the clubs will be eliminated.
“It’s another Brazilian who will be left behind. Fluminense is the current champion, they have a great team. We’ll have to decide with them probably at Maracanã. Now, we’ll play the Libertadores again in August. Until then, there’s a lot to do to happen both for our side and for Fluminense. When it gets close to the match we will think better about what to do and the strategy. In the same way that Fluminense knows Grêmio well, Grêmio knows Fluminense well. Brazilian football, unfortunately one will fall by the wayside”, he stated.
Now, Grêmio focuses on the Brazilian Championship. Tricolor Gaúcho returns to the field this Thursday, at 8pm (Brasília time), against Flamengo, at Maracanã, in the eighth round of the national league.
