This Friday, coach Julian Nagelsmann ended the debate about the German team’s starting goalkeeper in the European Championship. The coach guaranteed that Manuel Neuer, from Bayern Munich, will occupy the position among the 11. While Marc-André Ter Stegen, from Barcelona, will be on the bench.
“I don’t want to discuss the goalkeeper position. Manuel Neuer is and will be our starter. I won’t allow any discussion to arise before everyone tries to start one,” he said at a press conference after the national team’s 2-1 victory over Greece , at Borussia-Park, in a friendly.
Neuer missed the goal conceded by Germany in the match, but that was not enough to shake Nagelsmann’s confidence.

When Neuer was injured, throughout 2023 and the beginning of 2024, Ter Stegen was the one who took over the starting position. However, with the return of the Bayern Munich goalkeeper, he returned to the bench. During this week, Ter Stegen was questioned about this by the press and admitted his dissatisfaction.
“It’s not a pleasant situation. Even if I don’t agree, at the end of the day there is responsibility towards the group, so I’m going to help in whatever way I can. I told the coach that one thing is the sporting issue and another is the human issue. I want everyone to can trust me,” he said.
Germany, the host country of the European Championship, debuts in the competition next Friday, at 4pm (Brasília time), against Scotland, at the Allianz Arena.
