Peskov said that the decision to deprive the FCR of FIDE membership is discriminatory
Press Secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov assessed the deprivation of the Russian Chess Federation (RFC) of membership in the International Chess Federation (FIDE). His words are quoted by TASS.
Peskov said the decision was discriminatory. “Russia hopes that FIDE’s decision was made due to a misunderstanding that can be overcome,” the Kremlin spokesman added.
The FCR was deprived of FIDE membership on June 7. The suspension is valid for two years. The reason was that the FSR includes persons under sanctions. The disqualification was also influenced by the fact that the FSR held tournaments and events in Crimea. The last point was non-compliance with political neutrality.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, who is on the FCR board of trustees, said that the decision will be appealed by the FCR. It is noted that the FCR insists on considering this issue at the FIDE General Assembly in September 2024.
