With Grealish and Maddison out, Southgate defines England’s final list for the European Championship

The English Confederation announced this Thursday its final list of athletes who will compete in the European Championship. Coach Gareth Southgate had initially called up 33 athletes, with the list now being reduced to 26.

Among the players cut are: Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), James Maddison (Tottenham), Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), James Trafford (Burnley), Curtis Jones (Liverpool) and Jarrell Quansah (Liverpool) .

Jack Grealish had a poor season for City, but he is one of the wingers who were part of Southgate’s cycle, so there is surprise in his cut. Harry Maguire was sidelined by injury but, until recently, he was captain of the England team.

James Maddison, one of Tottenham’s best players of the season, was honest on his social media and vented about the cut for the Euros:

“Devastated is not enough. I trained well and worked hard all week, but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Tottenham upon returning from injury in the second half of the season was probably not at the levels I had set myself, which gave Gareth (Southgate) a decision to make. I still thought there would be room for me in a list of 26 players, as I feel I bring something different and I was one of the pillars throughout this qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany, but the coach made it. the decision and I have to respect that. I’ll be back, I have no doubt. I wish the boys all the luck in the world in Germany”, said the midfielder.
