Mäkelä said that Russian figure skaters will not be able to compete under the Finnish flag
The executive director of the Finnish Figure Skating Association, Salla Mäkelä, announced a refusal to transfer Russian athletes. Her words are quoted by Match TV.
“As long as there is a conflict, Russian citizens cannot compete under the Finnish flag,” Mäkelä said.
Previously, several Russian figure skaters changed their sports citizenship and joined the national teams of European countries. Daniil Grishin decided to represent France, Heinrich Hartung and Ulyana Tashkinova – Germany.
Sofya Titova and the pair Karina Akopova – Nikita Rakhmanin intend to skate for Armenia, Sofya Samodelkina joined the Kazakhstan national team, the pair Ekaterina Gainish – Dmitry Chigirev will compete under the flag of Uzbekistan, and Annabelle Morozov will join the US team in ice dancing.
Russian figure skaters were banned from competing in tournaments under the auspices of the International Skating Union (ISU) in March 2022. The last major competition for domestic athletes was the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
