Board member says Bayern close to announcing Vincent Kompany as coach

Bayern Munich is finalizing “the final details” to announce the arrival of former Belgian player Vincent Kompany as its new coach, said this Tuesday Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, member of the German club’s Supervisory Board, in an interview with Sky Italy.

Bayern is looking for a successor to Thomas Tuchel, who left his role a year before the end of his contract due to the team’s low season.

The club, dethroned in the Bundesliga by Bayer Leverkusen, also failed to win the German Cup and fell in the Champions League semi-final to Real Madrid.

The first name speculated was that of Xabi Alonso, who has a contract with Leverkusen until 2026, but refused the Bavarian proposal, as well as Julian Nageslmann, coach of the German national team, who renewed until the 2026 World Cup, and Ralf Rangnick, who decided to stay in the Austrian team.

The man of the moment, then, became Vincent Kompany, 38 years old, a former Belgian national team player who played for Hamburg and Manchester City and current coach of Burnley, in England.

“Our sporting director chose Kompany. It’s not official, but the last details are missing,” explained Rummenigge.

Contact between the parties, the manager confessed, was facilitated by Pep Guardiola. The Manchester City coach, who managed Bayern between 2013 and 2016, knows Kompany well, who was captain of the English team from 2013 to 2019.

According to the German press, there is a principle of agreement between Bayern and Kompany, as well as with Burnley, with whom the Belgian coach has a contract until 2028.
