Guberniev called the change of citizenship by athletes from Russia an irreversible process

Commentator Guberniev: changing citizenship by athletes is an irreversible process

Russian athletes want to compete at international competitions and prepare for the Olympics, commentator Dmitry Guberniev said in a conversation with Lenta.ru. For this reason, no matter how much the country strives to preserve its athletes, the change of citizenship by many professionals is irreversible, he believes.

“I thought the process of changing sports citizenship would be more active,” Guberniev noted. — Three World Hockey Championships have already passed without Russians, two and a half seasons of winter sports. It’s great that we still hold competitions, that conditions are created, that people have the opportunity to earn money and believe in the best. We are doing our best to retain athletes, but changing citizenship is an irreversible process.”

The commentator recalled that figure skating is an extremely competitive sport, therefore the desire of athletes to continue performing at international competitions by any means is normal and understandable.

“We have a lot of good skaters and I can only wish them good luck. They themselves have the right to choose where to live and where to work. From my point of view, it is inappropriate to create any obstacles in this regard. Our figure skating is strong, people want to compete at the European Championships and prepare for the Olympics, which is very much in question,” concluded the Lenta.ru interlocutor.
