Club Brugge is champion of Belgium for the 19th time

Club Brugge won the Belgian Championship for the 19th time in its history this Sunday by drawing goalless with neighbors Cercle Brugge in the last round, which was suspenseful until the end.

To be champion, Brugge needed to score a point in the last match and, thus, no longer be caught by the other contenders for the title: Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht.

The drama continued until the final stretch of the game, when Cercle Brugge scored in the 83rd minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

With the other results of the round (Union Saint-Gilloise’s 2-0 victory over Genk and Anderlecht’s 3-1 defeat to Royal Antwerp), Club Brugge finished with a point advantage over USG and four over Anderlecht.

This title is a miracle for the Brussels team: at the end of the regular phase, in which all 18 First Division teams face each other, Brugge had 19 points less than Union Saint-Gilloise (70 against 51).

But the division of points in the playoffs between the top six and Union’s negative run (four consecutive defeats) allowed Brugge to finish with the cup.
