Top scorer, Giroud says goodbye to Milan: “Proud to have played for this club”

Striker Olivier Giroud played his last game with the Milan shirt, this Saturday, at the San Siro, during a 3-3 draw with Salernitana in the Italian Championship. The Frenchman will go to Los Angeles FC, from Major League Soccer (MLS), in the United States. In his farewell season, the 37-year-old was the Italian team’s top scorer, with 17 goals in 47 matches. “His songs will always be in my heart. When I was a boy, I dreamed of playing for Milan. I am proud to have played for this club. I will never forget these three seasons at Milan. ‘Forza Milan!'”, said Giroud in his farewell. “I want to thank the club for the trust it placed in me. I was welcomed here like a brother in this family”, he added, emotionally.

On Milan’s list of top scorers this season, American Christian Pulisic and Portuguese Rafael Leão completed the podium, with 15 goals each. In the Italian Championship, Giroud scored 14 times, placing third in the competition’s artillery ranking.

Giroud announced his departure from Milan around a week and a half ago. At the Italian club, the striker played three seasons and took to the field 131 times. He scored 48 goals and provided 20 assists, in addition to being Serie A champion in 2022.

During his time in Europe, Giroud played for clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Montpellier. In addition to saying goodbye to Milan, the 37-year-old will say goodbye to France after Euro 2024.

At Los Angeles FC, Giroud will play with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, a teammate on the French team. It was the American team that also signed Gareth Bale, formerly of Real Madrid, in 2022, before the Welshman announced his retirement.
