Figure skater Veselukhin: sporting achievements depend on psychological preparation
Sports achievements depend by fifty and sometimes more percent on the quality of the athlete’s psychological preparation, said Russian figure skater (Broadmoor Club, USA) Daniil Veselukhin. He shared five secrets of success in a conversation with Lenta.ru.
Even from the outside, it is sometimes disappointing to watch when a well-prepared athlete fails an important competition solely because of anxiety and self-doubt, not to mention how the performer, his coach, partner or team feels at that moment

According to the skater, five tips will help to best demonstrate everything that the athlete has learned.
“Tip one: improve your stress resistance. Both the competitions themselves and the training process are a huge stress for both the physical condition and the psyche of the athlete. After all, in sports it is impossible to predict the result one hundred percent. Therefore, it is necessary to work with your fears and try to reduce susceptibility to sources of psychological discomfort,” he noted.
The second piece of advice Veselukhin shared was not to think about possible failure.
“The psychological attitude plays a huge role. A person is designed in such a way that the focus of his attention is directed to what he is thinking about. Therefore, even one failure “predicted” by you, as a rule, is followed by a second, ultimately only strengthening negative attitudes in the style of “I’m a weakling” and “I won’t succeed.” So overcome your internal limitations and cultivate positive thoughts in your mind,” the skater added.
Tip three: if something doesn’t work out, don’t blame yourself right away, but figure out the reasons. After all, even if physical fitness allows you to do anything, it is important that the sport is interesting to the person. Then victories won’t be long in coming.

Another piece of advice that Veselukhin gave was not to succumb to star fever and compete only with yourself.
“Often after winning prestigious competitions, athletes begin to think that no one will defeat them, and as a result they miserably fail the next competition. After all, this means that psychologically a person has set a bar for himself, beyond which there is simply nowhere to go. Correct behavior is when you compare your achievements not with the results of other athletes, but with yourself “yesterday,” the athlete explained.
In addition, the skater recommended that athletes contact a sports psychologist.
“Despite the fact that sports psychology is a fairly young field. Many people, especially coaches, are increasingly realizing that turning to a psychologist can help an athlete reach a new level of achievement. Competent psychological consultation is especially important for the work of athletes in a team,” he shared.
I would like to note that the above tips apply not only to sports, but also to art, education, business – in a word, they will be useful to all those who strive for success and intend to demonstrate their talents without false modesty
