Leverkusen loses long unbeaten run, and Atalanta makes history with Europa League title

Bayer Leverkusen finally lost its long unbeaten run on Wednesday afternoon, precisely in the final of the Europa League, played at the Dublin Arena. Responsible for ending the German team’s run, Atalanta counted on goals scored by the inspired Ademola Lookman to win 3-0 and win their first international title.

Winner of the German Championship, Bayer Leverkusen established a streak of 51 matches without defeat (42 wins and nine draws) until losing the Europa League final. Atalanta, founded in 1907, celebrates only its second elite title in history, having previously only won the Italian Cup (1963).

Celebrating, Atalanta returns to the field this Sunday, when they host Torino, at 1 pm (BrasΓlia time), for the 37th round of the Italian Championship. Leverkusen, in turn, will play the German Cup final against Kaiserslauten on Saturday, at 3pm, in a single match.

Atalanta opened the scoring 12 minutes into the opening half. Davide Zappacosta rolled into the area on the right wing, Ademola Lookman anticipated the marker at the second post and finished low to score the first goal of the game.

Atalanta increased the difference in the 26th minute of the opening stage. Lookman dominated at the edge of the area, gave the marker a pen and shot hard to score the second of the match.

Three minutes into the second half, Leverkusen tried to react. Amine Adli crossed for Jeremie Frimpong, who dominated inside the area, but exaggerated his strength and shot over.

The goal that closed the scoring for Atalanta came in the 30th minute of the second half, again from Ademola Lookman. Gianluca Scamacca stole the ball from Pasalic and passed it to the Nigerian striker, who took the marker out of the way and scored his third of the match.
