13-year-old chess player Ivan Zemlyansky became the youngest grandmaster of Russia
13-year-old chess player Ivan Zemlyansky became the youngest grandmaster in Russia. The Russian Chess Federation (RFC) reported this to RBC.
Zemlyansky fulfilled the international grandmaster standard at the tournament in Sharjah (UAE). In eight rounds, the young athlete scored five points, winning games against Indian chess players Abhijit Gupta and Aditya Mittal, as well as Vladimir Fedoseev representing Slovenia.
After this, grandmaster Sergei Shipov praised the chess player and stated that Zemlyansky was showing a mature game. At the same time, he emphasized that it is too early for an athlete to predict championship titles.
In December 2023, eight-year-old Russian chess player Roman Shogjiev defeated Norwegian grandmaster Johan-Sebastian Christiansen in the second match of the World Rapid and Blitz Championship in Samarkand. Shogjiev’s opponent was 25 years old and ranked 146th in the International Chess Federation rankings.
