Brazilian midfielder João Gomes stood out in his first full season in the Premier League. The player, trained in Flamengo’s youth teams, was one of the pillars of Wolverhampton, which earned him a place in Dorival Júnior’s Brazilian squad.
According to the Sofascore, the 23-year-old athlete was second in tackles among all 570 players in the English Championship. With an average of 3.8 per game, he made 128 tackles, totaling 183 balls recovered. First place went to Portuguese João Palhinha, from Fulham, who had an average of 4.6 tackles per game, 152 in the entire championship.
Furthermore, João has shown throughout the season how much physical capacity is part of his game. He played for Wolves as the team’s “little engine”, which earned him 211 duels won in total.

Despite not standing out with goals and assists due to his style of play, João still found the net twice and provided a goal in his 34 games played.
Wolverhampton did not have a memorable campaign in the 2023/24 Premier League. Despite being one of the three teams that managed to beat champions Manchester City, Wolves ended up in 14th place in the table at the end of the championship.
João Gomes presents himself for the Brazilian team on May 30th, along with the rest of the athletes who play outside of Brazil. He will be with the delegation for the dispute of two friendlies – against Mexico and the United States – and Copa América, which takes place between June 20th and July 14th.
