Skier Stepanova: foreigners envy the system of supporting athletes in Russia
Beijing 2022 Olympic champion in the ski relay Veronika Stepanova said on the Telegram channel of the Sports Training Center that foreign athletes are jealous of Russians.
Stepanova said that most of the skiers are jealous of the support system built in Russia for the best professional athletes. “Only a few people in any country can live on prize money and sponsorships; it is especially difficult when moving from juniors to adult sports,” she considered.
On April 7, the head of the Russian Ski Racing Federation, Elena Vyalbe, assessed the possibility of inviting Norwegian athletes to competitions in Russia. Vyalbe said that she is not going to invite foreign athletes to tournaments in Russia.
On October 25, 2023, the Council of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) extended sanctions against Russian athletes. For the first time, restrictions on the performance of Russians at international ski tournaments were imposed in March 2022.
