Colorado coach Bednar said that Nichushkin needs to understand the situation
Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar answered a question about the future of the club’s suspended Russian hockey player Valery Nichushkin. His words are quoted by Denver Sports.
“You hate this uncertainty because it makes planning difficult. We are hoping for some answers so we can start building the team for next season,” Bednar said. The coach added that it is necessary to understand the situation.
On May 14, the National Hockey League (NHL) suspended Nichushkin for six months, transferring him to the third stage of player assistance. During this period, the athlete will not receive wages. In January 2024, the Russian already participated in the assistance program, which is aimed at treating alcohol or drug addiction, solving problems with gambling or mental health.
In the current playoffs, the 29-year-old Russian forward played eight matches in which he scored nine goals and made one assist. Nichushkin is tied with Zach Hyman for first place in goals in the current Stanley Cup, but he was removed from the list in the league app.
