Dutchman Arne Slot will be Liverpool’s new coach

Current Feyenoord coach, Dutchman Arne Slot confirmed in a press conference this Friday (17) that he will take over at Liverpool next season, replacing Jürgen Klopp.

“There is no official announcement yet, but I can confirm that I will be (Liverpool’s) coach next season,” Slot told reporters, two days before the duel against Excelsior Rotterdam in the Dutch Championship.

Slot, 45 years old, is a fan of offensive football in the purest Dutch style. After passing through AZ Alkmaar (2019-2020) and Feyenoord (since 2021), Liverpool will mark their debut in one of the big European leagues.

His name was not the first to circulate as a possible replacement for Klopp, who earlier this year announced his departure from Liverpool, where he arrived in October 2015, claiming he had “no energy” to continue.

The first speculated was the Spaniard Xabi Alonso, former Liverpool player and sensation of the European season when he led Bayer Leverkusen to the unprecedented title of the German Championship.

Other names that emerged were Rúben Amorim, Portuguese champion with Sporting Lisbon, and Italian Roberto De Zerbi, from Brighton.

According to the specialized press, Liverpool paid 11 million euros (R$61 million at current prices) to Feyenoord to release the coach from the two years he still has on his contract.

“The Arne Slot era comes to an end”, wrote Feyenoord himself on the social network X.

The mission will not be easy for Slot, given the great charisma of Klopp, who on Sunday will play his last game at Anfield and who is an especially beloved figure at Liverpool.

With Klopp as coach, Liverpool experienced unforgettable moments, especially with the English Championship title in 2020 (the first in three decades) and the Champions League in 2019, 14 years after the “Istanbul miracle” against Milan.
