Botafogo beat Universitario-PER 1-0, this Thursday, in Lima. With the result, the black and white team reached nine points, in second place in group D, but classified for the round of 16 of the Libertadores. The Peruvians, with five, are in third, already eliminated.
Botafogo’s winning goal came in the second half, with Jeffinho.
In the last round, Botafogo travels to face Junior-COL, in Barranquilha, on May 28th. On the same day, Universitario faces LDU-EQU, in Quito.
The game
The match started with a lot of running from both teams, but without the creation of good moves. Botafogo had the first chance in the 20th minute. Marlon Freitas took a risk from the edge of the area and saw the ball pass close to the goal. On the other side, Universitario had more possession of the ball, but failed in finishing.
Little by little, the Peruvians began to dominate the match. With that, Universitario was prowling the black and white area. Botafogo had difficulty advancing and relied on throws for Júnior Santos.
In the final minutes, Universitario increased the pressure. The home team had good chances to open the scoring with aerial balls. Luckily for Botafogo, Riveros and Valera missed the target. Thus, the duel remained the same until halftime.
In the second half, the home team continued to dominate the proceedings. The Peruvians almost scored after ten minutes when Di Benedetto headed over John.
Botafogo tried to advance on counterattacks and had the chance to open the scoring in the 18th minute. Luiz Henrique was released, but finished very poorly. The move encouraged the black and white team, who improved in the match.
The Cariocas scored in the 31st minute. Savarino took advantage of the defense’s mistake and launched Jeffinho. The attacker invaded the area and touched Britos’s exit.
After the goal, Botafogo retreated and allowed Universitario to press again. However, the black and white team knew how to prevent the home team from creating good moves. Thus, the Cariocas held on to the result to confirm their classification for the round of 16 of the Libertadores.
