Zenit coach Sergei Semak denied reports of fines to players for defeats
Zenit head coach Sergei Semak commented on reports of fines to players for defeats. His words are quoted by the press service of the St. Petersburg club.
“Some talk about [глава ПАО “Газпром”] Alexey Borisovich Miller came into the locker room and said that the team had been fined – that’s not even close. It’s even somehow counterintuitive. Because if a team wins, it receives some kind of bonus, if it doesn’t win, it doesn’t,” Semak denied the reports.
Information about fines for Zenit players was first published by journalist Kirill Legkov. He stated that Alexey Miller allegedly promised to deprive the players of all bonuses if they did not win the Russian Cup at the end of the current season.
On May 15, Zenit reached the final of the Russian Cup, beating CSKA in a penalty shootout. In the decisive match of the tournament, the team from St. Petersburg will meet with Kaliningrad “Baltika”, which knocked out “Spartak” from the draw. The Russian Cup final will take place on June 2 at the capital’s Luzhniki Stadium.
