Karelin believed that Russian athletes need to compete at the 2024 Olympics
Three-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling Alexander Karelin spoke about the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Games, which will be held in Paris. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Those of our athletes who have successfully passed the qualification selection must participate in the Olympic Games in Paris. But only if no other restrictions follow, other than the level at which we have now stopped,” Karelin said.
Russian wrestlers have won 16 out of 18 possible licenses for the upcoming Olympics. Greco-Roman wrestlers and women wrestlers received five each, and freestyle representatives received six more. At the same time, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not allow two-time Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling from Russia Abdulrashid Sadulayev to qualify for the Games in Paris.
Russians and Belarusians will be able to take part in the 2024 Olympics as individual neutral athletes by decision of the IOC. However, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of the two countries, will miss the tournament. In addition, there will be no representatives of the two countries’ team sports in Paris.
